Honduras Hope leads immersion trips to work in two marginalized communities in the northeast region of the country. Plan Grande is a Tolupan Indian community and San Jose is a mountain community of squatters (people without formal title to their land). Both are located outside of the city of Yoro, in the department of Yoro (see map below). The organization has been working with these two communities since 2001. Jose Cristóbal Vasquez, is the Honduras Hope In-Country Coordinator.

In the Jewelry class, the participants will make “Tree of Life” Pendants of sterling silver wire and Swarovski crystal beads.

This class revives and teaches the students the traditional Tolupan method of making soap and shampoo from local fruit and flowers.

Many of the homes in Plan Grande are seriously in need of repair. We are working toward the goal that all of the homes in Plan Grande receive new cement floors, metal roofs and cement walls which help provide protection against the environment, parasites and disease. Culinary and Hospitality School (managed by CEVER)

Working to advance our mission to facilitate change in Honduras through small-scale rural development, Honduras Hope is in the process of building a Culinary and Hospitality School on the campus of the CEVER Vocational School, in Yoro. It is a joint venture with Alex Ray and The Common Man restaurants of New Hampshire and Rotary International. It will provide an opportunity for learning and employment for the people of San Jose and Plan Grande, and the communities surrounding Yoro.

The Culinary School will provide courses of study in food planning, preparation and service, restaurant management, and hotel operations. Interested students of all ages will be accepted. Graduates will be introduced to work opportunities in the nearby Caribbean resort island of Roatan.

The Culinary School will serve as a professional and environmental model. Its site, facing a dramatic mountain panorama, will also provide a venue for weddings and events, staffed by students under the supervision of their instructors.
